The Best Places to Stay in Manila as a Foreigner

Explore Manila’s top neighborhoods for digital nomads and business travelers. Honest insights from someone who’s actually lived here.

If you're planning to visit or relocate to Manila, picking the right area is key. As a dual citizen and digital nomad myself, I’ve stayed just about everywhere: from bustling BGC condos, to underrated spots in Mandaluyong, and vibrant Makati neighborhoods. Here’s my personal, no-BS take on where to stay if you’re a digital nomad, business traveler, or expat looking to settle down—even temporarily—in Manila.

1. Mandaluyong: Greenfield District, The Hidden Gem

I personally love the Greenfield District in Mandaluyong—and I think it's incredibly underrated. Price-wise, it’s definitely friendlier on the wallet than the trendier spots, but it still offers a lot of what digital nomads and business travelers look for.

First off, food is great and surprisingly diverse. You’ve got cafés scattered everywhere, perfect for working remotely or meeting clients. It’s not just your typical Starbucks chains—there are plenty of independent cafés with a nice, quiet atmosphere. Beyond coffee, the area has seriously good restaurants. Japanese, Korean, Filipino fusion—take your pick.

Another standout is the big open field—hence the name “Greenfield”—right at the heart of it. It’s a refreshing contrast from the concrete jungle around Manila. This open space regularly hosts events like digital nomad meetups, business circles, weekend markets, and outdoor yoga. If networking or community-building is important to you, Greenfield is a solid spot.

2. Bonifacio Global City (BGC): Safe, Walkable, and Foreigner-Friendly

Everyone mentions BGC, and honestly, it deserves the hype. But be warned—it’s easily the most expensive area in Manila. Still, if you’re okay spending extra for convenience, it’s worth it.

One of the biggest perks for foreigners here is safety. Streets are brightly lit, sidewalks are wide and walkable (rare for Manila), and everything is clean and modern. Internet is blazing fast, coworking spaces are plentiful, and you'll spot plenty of familiar international brands.

However, this convenience comes with a trade-off. The vibe can feel more status-driven compared to other parts of Manila. It sometimes feels like people are sizing each other up based on what they wear, where they work, or how fancy their condo building is. Still, for business travelers who prioritize convenience, cleanliness, and connectivity, BGC remains a great option.

3. Makati (Poblacion): Rowdy, Real, and Organic

Makati’s Poblacion district is a personal favorite, but it’s not for everyone. It’s vibrant, chaotic, and feels authentically Filipino. While BGC sometimes feels sanitized, Poblacion is gritty and real.

Nightlife in Poblacion is unmatched. What I love most is that everyone parties as equals—there’s no pretension here. You could be hanging out with a local artist, a banker, or a startup CEO at any given bar. It feels genuine. Plus, food here is diverse and authentic. You’ll find hidden street food gems next door to trendy speakeasies.

The trade-off? It’s noisier, busier, and definitely more crowded. But if cultural immersion, networking, and a down-to-earth atmosphere are your thing, you’ll quickly understand why expats and travelers love Poblacion.

4. Century Spire & Tivoli: Condos That Feel Like Home

When picking an actual building, I’m biased toward places my team manages, but with good reason. Take Century Spire, for instance. It’s a newer, underrated condo in Makati, and it truly stands out. Beyond just modern amenities, what makes it special is the staff. The building has professional, genuinely friendly personnel who go above and beyond, whether you’re an owner, tenant, or guest. That kind of service genuinely elevates your living experience.

Another favorite is Tivoli Garden Residences in Mandaluyong. It feels like staying at a resort right in the heart of the city. With spacious pools, lush landscaping, and family-friendly amenities, Tivoli offers a peaceful escape from the city hustle. If you appreciate comfort, quiet, and relaxation after a busy day working in the city, Tivoli is perfect.

5. My Best Advice: Don't Rush Into a Lease

Finally, if there’s one piece of advice I’d stress, it’s this: Don’t jump into a long-term lease right away. Manila neighborhoods can vary dramatically block-to-block, and every condo has its quirks. Always book short-term initially—Airbnb is your friend. Spend at least a couple weeks living in the place, walking the streets, and testing out your commute.

Doing this saved me plenty of headaches. I’ve never had to break a lease or regret my choice, precisely because I took my time and understood the lay of the land before committing.

I’ve stayed all over Metro Manila, and if you’re feeling overwhelmed, I’ve got your back. At ManilaNests and KuboFlips, we help digital nomads and expats find fully managed rentals that actually feel like home.
